My AC System in Tucker, GA, Is Making Noise: Why?
Unusual noises from your air conditioner can range from harmless to a sign that you need immediate repairs or replacement. Here’s why your AC system is making noise and how you should resolve the issue:
Squealing
Some older AC systems often squeal during startup. However, if the squealing is new or persistent, it may indicate that certain components will fail soon. Outdoor fan motors and indoor blower motors, as well as the blower wheel and housing, often squeal when it’s time for a replacement.
Clicking
Many AC systems make clicking noises at the beginning and end of each cycle when there are no broken parts. This is typically normal and not a cause for concern.
However, if you hear ongoing clicking, a short or malfunctioning thermostat may be causing an electrical problem. A fan imbalance or debris, such as twigs or leaves, can also cause clicking.
Clanking
Loose or broken internal parts in the sealed indoor compressor unit typically cause clanking indoors. Sometimes the entire indoor compressor loosens. A damaged indoor blower or outdoor fan will also make clanking noises.
Banging
Loose screws or springs in the outdoor compressor may cause banging sounds. Debris trapped in the system or improper installation by a service technician can also cause this. Additionally, connecting rods and piston pins tend to loosen over time and will cause the system to both bang and rattle.
Loose parts near or in the blower may cause banging to come from the indoor unit in similar cases. Expanding or contracting ductwork can also create banging noises, and temperature changes make metal ducts especially susceptible to this. Your service technician may recommend replacement for either unit if AC repairs or maintenance don’t fix the problem.
