What Is the Reversing Valve?

Heat pumps rely on a specially designed solenoid valve to provide heating and cooling depending on your immediate needs. Solenoid valves are often associated with cars since they’re part of the ignition relay. Once your key triggers the ignition, the solenoid valve is vital for sending gas to the engine. It also ensures that the gas stops flowing once you turn off your vehicle.

In air-source heat pumps, solenoid valves reverse the flow of refrigerant. Instead of cooling the air and releasing excess heat outside like an ordinary air conditioner, the system can reverse the cycle to distribute heat across your home.

Understanding Solenoid Valves

Solenoids are a type of electromagnetic valve powered by a coil and magnet. They feature a moving armature controlled by the magnetic field that the coil generates. Due to this design, the valve can become stuck in the open or closed position. Additionally, the armature may not engage fully if the coil is not properly energized.
