Why Does My AC System Make My Home Hotter?
If you discover that your air conditioner has been making your home in Dunwoody, GA, warmer, you may not know what to do. Understanding the cause is the first step to resolving the issue. Here are a few possible reasons your AC system might make your house feel hotter rather than cooler:
AC Refrigerant Leaks
Your air conditioner uses refrigerant to remove heat from your home. In essence, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air in your home, evaporates, moves into your AC system’s compressor, heats up even further and then compresses in its evaporator coils. After condensing, the refrigerant releases its heat outdoors, and the resulting cool air flows into your home.
Without enough refrigerant, this process either can’t happen or can only occur to a diminished extent. As a result, your AC system won’t be able to produce much cool air and may even blow warm air instead.
We cannot stress strongly enough that refrigerant is hazardous and that you shouldn’t handle it yourself. Let the professionals stop all leaks and refill your air conditioner.
Dirty Filters
Another possibility is that your AC system’s filters have become very dirty and can no longer allow for proper airflow. Once this happens, your air conditioner may overheat and expel hot air into your home. To help prevent this, clean or replace your filters every 60 to 90 days.
Thermostat Issues
Since your thermostat sends signals to your central AC system, you must make sure that everything functions properly with it. If the thermostat malfunctions, it’ll send the wrong signals to your air conditioner. Accidentally using higher temperature settings and fan mode can have the same effect.
Air conditioning maintenance services or repairs can take care of issues such as recalibration and faulty wiring. You should schedule AC maintenance at least once every year.
