History
Settlement in the region of present-day Sandy Springs dates back to 400 A.D. The area was inhabited by Cherokees and Creeks when European settlers began to arrive in the 1500s. The city gets its name after the local natural springs. Sandy Springs transformed from a rural trading post into a farming community after the Land Lottery of 1825. During the Civil War, Sandy Springs stood as the last natural barrier between General Sherman's advancing Federal Army and Atlanta. The city's role in the war is commemorated at the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum, which is housed in the historic Williams-Payne House near the original freshwater springs.

Encompassing around 38 square miles of land, Sandy Springs stretches from Atlanta in the south to the Chattahoochee River in the north and west. The communities of Dunwoody and Brookhaven lie on the city's eastern boundary. Atlanta's Interstate 285 Highway loop cuts through the southern section of Sandy Springs.
